Putnam NY Sheriff Chases Down Apparently Inebriated Oklahoman
First trespass, then a car chase, then a foot chase, then a scuffle, with good samaritans giving help, police said.

PHILIPSTOWN, NY â A driver apparently under the influence of both drugs and alcohol faces many charges after a bizarre run-in with Putnam County Sheriff Robert Langley, Jr.
Langley was at his home in Philipstown at 6:15 p.m. May 15 when he observed a vehicle he didn't recognize trespassing on his property.
When the Sheriff went to investigate (later identified as Brant D. Carter) the driver appeared to be under the
influence of drugs and/or alcohol, and pulled away in a reckless manner at a high rate of speed.

Langley jumped into his police vehicle and was able to follow Carter to Route 9 at Cross Road where the 33-year-old pulled over â apparently ready to comply.
When Langley approached the vehicle and identified himself to Carter, he said he could smell alcohol on the suspectâs breath as well as marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Langley ordered the suspect to shut off his vehicle several times. Carter ignored the requests.

Then he reached for the gear shift and sped off almost striking the Sheriff, who had to jump out of the way.
Carter attempted to evade Langley, who was following close behind. Aided by the stopped traffic at the intersection of 403 and Route 9 due to the storms occurring that afternoon, Carter was boxed in at the
Appalachian Market.
He got out of the car, and when ordered to get on the ground he tried to run away. Langley was able to neutralize Carter after a brief struggle in which the Sheriff sustained physical injuries.
The Sheriff thanks the Garrison Volunteer Fire Company and the help of a few good Samaritans including Charlie Polhemus of Garrison, NY for their assistance.
Subsequently, Sheriffâs Deputies arrived on the scene to assist.
Carter failed sobriety tests and several open containers of alcohol, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were recovered from inside his vehicle. He also did not have identification on him and had to be identified through fingerprints at the Sheriffâs Substation in Nelsonville.
He was charged with Assault in the Second Degree, a âDâ felony offense, Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, Resisting Arrest, DWI, and other related charges.
Carter, who lives in Stillwell, OK was released after posting bail pending a future court date.
