Residents Warned Of Driveway Paving Scam: Putnam County Sheriff

BREWSTER, NY — Officials are warning homeowners to do their due diligence when choosing a contractor.

Sheriff Kevin J. McConville is warning residents of a recent driveway paving scam in Brewster.

A homeowner reported being approached by two men who claimed to be from a paving company that had leftover asphalt from a nearby job. They drove a black, unmarked Ford F-150 pickup truck, which the sheriff said is a common tactic scammers use to appear professional and legitimate.

The sheriff added that scammers also often use the pretext of having surplus materials to lure unsuspecting victims into agreeing to work that may be subpar, overpriced, or unnecessary.

In this case, the resident exercised caution and turned down the offer. Since he was aware of the possibility that the two men were scammers, he stopped any further engagement with them, which resulted in the pair leaving the area.

Sheriff McConville stressed the importance of vigilance and caution when approached by people offering unsolicited services, especially in home improvement. Homeowners should conduct proper research, seek reputable contractors, and obtain multiple quotes before making home repairs or improvements.
