Unlike football, lacrosse is something that Brewster senior Trevor Smith did not grow up playing. Nevertheless, he has become a skilled player and says he enjoys the sport almost as much as football.
“All my friends play lacrosse,” Smith said. “I find it a lot of fun. I just enjoy the sport a lot. I enjoy the constant pace of the game. No other sport is like it.”
Smith has come to like lacrosse so much, he said he is considering playing that or football in college.

“I only started playing lacrosse like two years ago to help keep me in shape for football and I actually have grown to like the sport,” Smith said. “I’ve become pretty good at it, I might even play it in college. The physicality of football helped me out in lacrosse."
Smith , who was co-captain of this year's football team, has played running back, kicker, punter, returner and also saw time on the defensive side. The senior shined in his last game on the gridiron for the Bears, running for career highs in both yards and touchdowns.

He rushed for 210 yards on 19 carries, scored five touchdowns plus kicked five extra points in a 41-18 romp against host Saunders.
Smith, co-captain of this year's lacrosse squad, plays a long-stick middle fielder, but he has also branched out into other areas in order to help the Bears get back on track after a 2-6 start.
“He plays pretty much the whole game,” Brewster co-captain and senior attackman Paul Dingee said. “He’s recently been working on trying to take face-offs for us now because we are struggling in that area. He’ll play the wing, he’ll play close defense for us. He’s on the field pretty much the whole game, playing all over the defensive side of the field.”
Smith’s first game taking face-offs came in a 12-4 loss at Somers on April 26.
“It was actually just last game that coach (Mike Honey) had me try face-offs,” Smith said. “It was a little new but I didn’t do too bad at it. I enjoyed it. I liked it. It was my first time so obviously I need to work on it.”
Smith said that he is fine with being on the field as much as he is.
“I am OK with it,” Smith said. “Whatever helps my team best. I am in pretty good shape. My coach needs me, my team needs me, I will be there.”
It’s that type of attitude that makes Smith a great teammate to play with, according to Dingee.
“It’s great playing alongside him,” Dingee said. “He’s plays a lot of sports. He’s a competitor. Whenever he’s on the field, he’s going to make a play. He’s going to try his hardest to make the people around him better.”
The fact that Smith does that is especially important because the Bears go against a tough schedule with a squad that has a slew of younger players.
“Right now we are in the toughest stretch of our schedule,” Smith said.
The Bears face Lakeland/Panas at home at 4:30 p.m. on May 3 and then travel to Yorktown for a 4:30 game on May 5.
"Hopefully these games, even though that we may not win them, it will be a good experience for the younger players," Smith said. “We only have three seniors on our team. We have mostly juniors and sophomores and a couple of freshmen. Having the experience of playing teams that are state ranked, hopefully that will help out when we play in the sectionals.”
