Teamwork, Tire Stick Help Put An Abrupt End To Police Chase Across 2 Counties

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Authorities in multiple jurisdictions worked together to safely end a potentially dangerous flight from justice.

On Wednesday, the Westchester/Putnam Real Time Crime Center notified the Carmel Police Department about a van that fled from Yorktown police during a traffic stop.

Officers began the pursuit on Route 6 in Shrub Oak. The chase continued east on Route 6, entering into Putnam County.

The Carmel Police Department and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office coordinated the chase with the New York State Police – Somers Barracks.

Carmel Police Department detectives set up a tire deflation device, also known as a "stop stick," to stop the van. Attempting to avoid the device as they approached Union Valley Road, the fleeing suspects drove into the Route 6 Mart gas station, where they got stuck behind another vehicle.

One suspect was taken into custody at the scene and the other was apprehended by Carmel police officers on Buckshollow Road after a brief foot chase.

The two suspects were turned over to Yorktown police.

"While these types of vehicle pursuits are always a concern for law enforcement, this is a great example of the coordination between all the agencies involved to apprehend those responsible for these dangerous acts and keep the community safe," the Carmel Police Department said in a statement released on social media on Thursday. "Great teamwork everyone."
