Track: Brewster Boys Continue To Excel
Bears tie for third in Class A championships; Carr qualifies for states.

Brewster’s boys track squad has enjoyed a lot of success over this spring and that continued at the Class A championships at Suffern Middle School.
The Bears tied with Mount Vernon and Arlington for third place with 43 points. North Rockland was first with 119 points and New Rochelle second with 67 points.
“We have a core group of really, really top-notch varsity kids, that helped us score,” Brewster coach Joe Scelia said. “We had a lot of kids place real high and we had two individual winners in Charlie Carr and Justin Maguire.”

Carr, a junior, topped all athletes in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:19.4, breaking his own school record.
“That was one of the greatest races I have ever seen Charlie run,” Scelia said. “He won the race in four seconds in a highly competitive field. It was one of the most competitive fields in all of New York State. He blew away the competition. Charlie always seems to peak well at the right time and he couldn’t have picked a better time to run a breakout race.”

Carr said that the key to the Bears’ success was that it could get points from anywhere.
“We have a lot of good frontrunners in a bunch of different events,” Carr said. “Jason DiNardo, is really good at the high jump and the long jump. Also, Jevon Gooden does the long jump and triple jump and in those two events usually scores pretty high in meets.”
“And in distance events, I, Justin Maguire and Adam McIe did well. I won the mile and Justin won two 2-mile,” Carr continued. “Andrew Sniffen is pretty strong in the throws. Greg Hodge did well in the 400. We have a few key athletes in each event that can score a lot of points.”
Maguire, also a junior, earned his first-place finish in the 3,200-meters, with a time of 9:53.7.
“Justin was section champ in cross country and was coming off of a very good indoor-track season,” Scelia said. “By the time the 3,200 came along, the track was burning up and Justin handled the weather well. He had a great last mile to win the race. Again, in a very highly competitive field.”
DiNardo, a senior, was second in the high jump, with a mark of six feet, two inches and fourth in the long jump at 21 feet 8.5 inches. His long jump broke the school record by a half inch.
“Jason has been the best jumper we have ever had by far,” Scelia said. “He’s been pretty dominant in high jump and long jump the past three years. He was ready for a breakout performance. He’s a gamer. He rises up to any challenge.”
Scoring in the discus and shot put for the Bears was Sniffen.
“Andrew has been our best thrower for the last four years,” Scelia said. “He scored some valuable points for us in the discus and shot put.”
Carr makes states
Carr continued his success at the Division 1 state qualifier meet on Friday at White Plains High School when he finished first in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:19.68.
That enables Carr to compete at the state championships for the first time. The states will take place Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11, at Caledonia-Mumford High School in Rochester.
