It was an outstanding performance for the Brewster boys' track squad, as it won the League I-B championship meet, held at Carmel (May 2) and John Jay High School (May 3).
The Bears easily outdistanced the field, winning the championship by 61 points. Brewster was so successful, because the team has the ability to get psyched up for the big meets, according to coach Joe Scelia.
Scelia said that he and Larry Maggiotto, the Bears other head coach, make it a point to get the team fired up for big meets and it showed in the league championships.

“The league meet is one example of how our boys always rise up under pressure,” Scelia said. “We work these boys hard, we believe in them, and once the connection is made, these kids want to do well. They will put in the work that others won't and are willing to push themselves beyond their threshold.”
Highlighting the win was the first-place finish of the 4x400 relay team of Charlie Carr, Kamal Johnson, Adam McIe and Greg Hodge.

“The 4 x 400 relay is always the last event of the entire meet,” Scelia said. “It has been tradition over the past few years that we close the meet in epic style, and this year, the four guys in that relay blew away the field and won the relay. All four guys rose up. They are all friends, they love competition and to see the emotion and passion that they put in to the race is what a coach looks for in a track athlete.”
Scelia was also pleased with how his girls, who placed third, performed as well.
“Our girls team is very young,” Scelia said. “Out of all the points we scored, we bring back every point scorer next year, so things look up for the future of the girls.”
