• SBU Professors Awarded More Than $270K by New York DEC (stonybrook.edu) — Stony Brook University professors Robert Thacker and Elizabeth Watson have secured more than $270,000 from New York's DEC to tackle invasive species on Long Island and beyond. Their projects will fund multiple graduate and undergraduate researchers, improve freshwater and forest health, and include a major collaboration with the Shinnecock Nation that gives students hands-on experience with tribal environmental work and conservation.
   

• Katzarkhov Leading SBU Simons Center for Geometry and Physics (stonybrook.edu) — Stony Brook University's Simons Center for Geometry and Physics has a new director, mathematician Ludmil Katzarkov, whose appointment began September 1. Campus leaders say his groundbreaking work in geometry and homological mirror symmetry, along with his leadership experience, will guide the center's next phase as an international hub for math and physics research and visiting scholars.
   

• Renaissance School of Medicine Welcomes 136 First-year Medical Students in Annual White Coat Ceremony (stonybrook.edu) — New first-year medical students at Stony Brook University's Renaissance School of Medicine officially began their training at an August 28 White Coat Ceremony on campus. The highly selective Class of 2030, largely from New York and Long Island, donned white coats, took the Physician's Oath, and heard leaders emphasize human connection and compassion amid rapid advances in medical technology and AI.
