Brooklyn Pharmacist Sold $150K In Oxycodone On Black Market: DA

Pharmacist Hoi In Mui stands accused of illegally ordering and selling about 5,000 pills of the addictive opioid, prosecutors said.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK -- A Brooklyn pharmacist was busted Wednesday for stealing $150,000 worth of opioids to sell on the black market, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Hoi In Mui, 41, stands accused of using her position at a Bensonhurst pharmacy to order 5,000 oxycodone pills, forging prescriptions to cover her tracks, then selling the drugs for profit, according to a joint statement from New York City's special narcotics prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan and the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.

Office of the Medicaid Inspector General officials first became suspicious of Mui during a routine inspection of UHealthy Pharmacy on 86th and Bay 32nd streets on Sept. 11, 2017, prosecutors said.

When an investigator asked to see prescriptions for the 1,140 oxycodone pills that had been ordered two days prior, Mui said the papers were in her home and not, as the law requires, filed at the pharmacy, said prosecutors.

Mui later handed over eight prescriptions from a Brownsville doctor whom she said had prescribed eight different patients with oxycodone in one day, said prosecutors.

A second inspection on March 8 uncovered forms showing 5,000 oxycodone pills had been ordered between May and September 2017, but there were no pills in the pharmacy, said prosecutors.

Mui was arrested on drug possession charges outside her home at 242 Bay 11th Street at about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, prosecutors said.

The Bensonhurst doctor was arraigned on 10 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance and eight counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument in Manhattan Criminal Court Wednesday night, then released on bail, according to prosecutors.
