Free Sunset Park Legal Defense Workshop to Start Oct. 20

The Participatory Defense Initiative will offer free legal advice every other week to Sunset Parkers who need help.

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — A new, free bi-monthly legal workshop put on by Sunset Park activist group El Grito de Sunset Park and Brooklyn Defender Services is kicking off this Thursday.

The first event is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 20 at 219 51st St., and will subsequently take place every two weeks at the same location.

El Grito co-founder Dennis Flores said the program, known as the Participatory Defense Initiative, is designed to help low-income and immigrant members of the community understand their legal options if they or someone in their family has been charged with a crime, either fairly or unfairly. Participants can also learn how to build a case in their defense, he said.

"This would be a place where you can get some legal advice, where you can basically network, [and find] folks in the community who would be supportive," Flores said.

The first meeting will take place in both English and Spanish, but Flores said that El Grito hopes to be able to conduct future meetings in Chinese and other languages as well.
