Back Pain Relief Through a Simple Lifestyle Change

Back pain can be a real pain in the neck, figuratively if not literally.

Back pain can be a real pain in the neck, figuratively if not literally.

Often caused by weak muscles that are unable to support daily activities or proper posture, neck and lower back pain is annoying, painful and can even be debilitating.

Basic core-strengthening exercises such as pushups, sit ups and planking can help people avoid and prevent the pain and suffering says a New York pain management physician.

“Five minutes of exercise every morning is all you need to strengthen your core to help prevent back pain,” says John Stamatos, MD, director of interventional pain management at Syosset Hospital.

He encourages that people get up and move around as much as possible throughout the day, especially for those who sit at a desk for long periods of time.

“We live a sedentary life style, and this is terrible for your back,” said Dr. Stamatos. “Your back needs frequent movement and stretching. If you start to experience back pain, stretch and get the muscles warm and moving. This is crucial because without it the muscles get stiff and you’ll begin to recruit other muscles to act abnormally.”

Dr. Stamatos emphasizes that without making a lifestyle change through exercise, back pain and clinical treatments will become more frequent. He encourages people to look into wellness and treatment programs such as Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Services (STARS) to help get on track, manage pain and get moving again.

“Back pain that lasts more than four or five days is likely not to get better, and (means it’s) time to consult your primary care physician.”
