Fire Commissioners Say No to Cold Spring Road House Construction

A motion was passed to abandon any possible future construction plans at the 83 Cold Spring Road house at Wednesday's meeting.

The Board of Commissioners at the Syosset Fire District passed a motion to abandon any possible future plans to build on the parcel of land it owns at 83 Cold Spring Road and return any funds earmarked for a potential building at that site to capital reserves at the annual reorganization meeting at Syosset Fire Headquarters Wednesday evening.

The Board also agreed to pursue other options for that parcel, which could include a sale of the property.

The meeting began with the swearing-in of  The Board of Commissioners then proceeded to review and vote on all of the District's standard operating procedures for 2011, and then voted to meet at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month this year, with a couple of exceptions for conflicts with holidays. The Board also voted to sell a 1994 Saulsbury 75-foot ladder truck to the Protection Fire Company No.1 in Byfield, Massachusetts for the sum of $165,000.  The Commissioners noted at the meeting that the truck was originally purchased 16 years ago for $380,000, yielding an over 40% recovery of the District's original expenditure for the piece of apparatus.  The old ladder truck was recently replaced with a new, state-of-the-art 100-foot ladder truck, which is assigned to Station 3, next to the library on South Oyster Bay Road, just north of the Expressway.

The Board of Fire Commissioners will next meet on Monday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. and members of the public are encouraged to attend.
