Syosset Tutoring Center Heavily Damaged In Fire

SYOSSET, NY — A fire broke out Monday morning at a tutoring center inside strip mall near Jackson Avenue and Ira Road in Syosset, prompting a heavy response from firefighters. The blaze started around 7:15 a.m. in a commercial building near 31 Ira Rd., Nassau County police and firefighters told Patch.

Syosset firefighters arrived to heavy smoke billowing out of a row of stores, fire officials told Patch. They searched the stores and found a fire inside Mathnasium, a tutoring center for kids in grades K-12. The center was heavily damaged and smoke damaged surrounding stores as well.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Bethpage, Hicksville, Westbury, Plainview, Jericho, East Norwich, Oyster Bay, and Huntington Manor were each called to the scene, fire officials said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Photos obtained by Patch showed charred debris and a partially caved-in ceiling. Smoke damage Apple desktop computers, notebooks and files.

Jackson Avenue was closed in both directions, causing traffic headaches for morning commuters and Long Island Rail Road travelrs trying to get to the train station. The Nassau County Traffic Management tweeted Monday morning that the public should use caution in the area due to fire department activity.

Barry Gliner told Patch in a Facebook message Monday he was heading to the Syosset train station around 8:20 a.m. when he saw numerous firefighters at the strip mall. Gliner paused to snap some photos.
