Food For Thought

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I love good food! And I enjoy cooking - though I’m no Rachel Ray or Julia Child - I get a kick out of preparing a good dinner. The other day, as I was searching for a few new recipes, a thought came to mind: Food plays a really big part in our every-day lives…even in the words we say. Here’s a few examples:

ROLL         “We’re on a roll…” (We’re experiencing one success after another)

                             and

                   “Let’s go for a roll in the hay!” (No need to explain this one!)

BACON     “Bring home the bacon” (Bring money home!)

CHICKEN  “You’re such a chicken” (You’re too afraid!)

PORK        “Don’t load that bill with pork!” (Political spending for support!)

TOAST      “We’re toast!” (We’re dead…or in trouble!)

BREAD      “We’ve got lots of bread” (We’re rich!)

BUTTER    “Like butter!” (It went real easy!)

FISH          “Something smells fishy here!” (Something’s not right!)

JAM           “We’re in a jam!” (We’re in trouble!)

BAGEL      “We got bageled in our tennis match” (We got ZERO points!)

HOT DOG “Hot Dog! (Wow…that’s great!)

LEMON     “This car is a lemon” (This is a car with big problems!)

APPLE       “He’s the apple of my eye” (I cherish him above all others!)

PEACH      “That would be peachy keen!” (That would be just fine!)

FUDGE      “Just fudge your way through it” (Just change it around so it                           works!)

SHRIMP    “He’s such a little shrimp!” (He’s small and puny!)

CLAM        “Please don’t clam up!” (Please don’t get suddenly quiet!)

CHEESE   “That’s so cheesy of you!” (You’re so obvious and sentimental!)

PEPPER   “Don’t pepper the conversation with that!” (Skip the small details!)

BEEF         “Beef up the conversation” (Add something important!)

SOUP        “His car is souped up” (Wow, that car goes fast!)

CANDY      “She sure is eye candy!” (She sure is beautiful!)

I bet there are many more words like these. But suddenly I’m quite hungry, and I have to check out my refrigerator now. Hope you enjoyed this…cause for me, it was a piece of cake!
