Getting a Good Head Start with Veganuary?

Veganuary is a month when people are challenged to forego dairy, meat and eggs.

Veganuary -- or a month when people are challenged to forego dairy, meat and eggs – is a British couple’s attempt to spread awareness about the vegan lifestyle.

Veganism takes vegetarianism a step further and does not incorporate any animal products or byproducts.

“We’ve seen that most people who are already on a vegetarian diet have the best opportunity for success on a vegan diet,” says Eric Sieden, director of food and nutritional services at Plainview and Syosset hospitals. “But if you’re a meat eater, a cheese eater, you love dairy, you’re going to have a difficult time just turning it on. Just like every other New Year’s resolution, they’re not sustained unless they’re done in earnest and with a lot of motivation.”

Mr. Sieden suggests for those who want to make a solid attempt at becoming vegan or even just adhering to veganuary to also realize that they need to modify their lifestyle to help suit maintaining this dietary change.

“Like any diet, it’s about lifestyle changes,” Mr. Sieden says.
