Pokemon Characters Showing Up in Front of Sex Offenders' Homes in Nassau County

The popular new game requires users to catch Pokemon in real life.

A report released recently by State Sen. Jeff Klein found that Pokemon from the popular game Pokemon Go have appeared over 80 times in front of a high-level sex offenders’ homes in Nassau County.

The app, which was released in July, requires users to catch Pokemon in real life using their phones. Over 100 million people have already downloaded Pokemon Go, according to a press release from Klein's office.

The investigation found that out of 100 Level 2 and 3 sex offender addresses examined, Pokemon have appeared 88 times directly in front of high-level sex offenders’ homes in Nassau County, 14 pokestops and gyms were found a half-block away and 74 percent of the time a Pokémon related item — Pokémon character, pokéstop or gym— was near a high-level sex offenders’ home in Nassau County, according to Klein.

This is the third investigation on the game conducted by Klein's office, with one conducted in New York City, and another in Westchester and Rockland Counties.

“Catching a Pidgey or a Pinsir or a Pikachu is fun, but we do not want our children to be caught by a predator," Klein said.

The Independent Democratic Conference have proposed a law that would ban in-game activity from within 100-feet of dangerous sexual predators’ homes, according to the press release.
