Library Welcomes New Officers and Gets Kudos From the Blogosphere
The Board of Trustees held their reorganizational meeting on July 19.
The Board of Trustees swore in treasurer Reid Goldsmith at their reorganizational meeting on Tuesday and appointed sitting trustees Jane Evans and Robert Glick as president and vice president, respectively.
Library Director Karen Liebman discussed the library's which went live on June 17, saying that it “is a better reflection of the physical library,” and thanked the sites developers, while also citing a jump in patron use of online databases and services like Live Homework Help.
Liebman also announced that she will be joining the Nassau County Library Association Executive Board through December.

Assistant Director Lisa Caputo announced that the Syosset Library’s third floor Health Reference Center, opened in May, was recently designated as a “Consumer Health Library” by Medline Plus, a web-based resource of consumer health information sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
The Syosset Public Library is one of only two public libraries in New York State to receive such a designation, the other being Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, she said.

“These libraries are recognized as having substantial consumer health resources,” Caputo said. “Most of the other libraries listed as Consumer Health Libraries are health libraries. It’s very exciting that we are now a public library that meets the same standards as a consumer health library.”
Caputo also commended the success of the library’s summer reading club programs which count 94 currently-enrolled adults and over 500 children and teens.
The Syosset Public Library received an approval from the blogosphere this past week. Local blogger, library student, and Elmont Public Library Young Adult section employee Danielle Gregori pitted the Syosset Public Library against Roslyn’s Bryant Public Library in her blog series called “Battle of the Libraries,” and declared Syosset the victor. In the series, Gregori evaluates Nassau libraries based on the vibrancy of their Young Adult section, customer service, and user-friendliness, among other criteria.
“It’s a very hard thing to compare libraries,” said Liebman in response to the post. “We’re a brand new, very large building and other libraries are smaller…to blog about something after only walking in once is difficult, but she had a very good experience here and we’re proud of that.”
The board voted to skip next month’s regularly scheduled meeting, therefore the next Syosset Library Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 13 at 7 p.m.
