Local Students Rally for Education

Urge Support for Education Tax Credits

June 2, 2015, Glen Cove, NY: A group of more than 60 students from local schools, including All Saints Catholic, St. Dominick, St. Edward, and their supporters rallied outside the Glen Cove office of Assemblyman Charles D. Lavine (D) today to seek his support for Governor Cuomo’s Education Tax Credit proposals now being considered by the State Legislature.

The group held signs outside the School Street office urging support for the bill, which provides tax credits for donors to public school programs and private school scholarships, as well as tuition tax credits for lower income families and for public school teachers who use their own funds to purchase classroom supplies.

The group received an enthusiastic reaction from passing pedestrians and motorists, while a smaller delegation of students and school leaders met inside with members of Assemblyman Lavine’s staff. After the meeting, delegation members reported said that they appreciated the opportunity the office staff had provided for a very cordial and constructive conversation about the merits of the bill, and the urgent need to take immediate action on it before the Assembly session ends in a few weeks’ time.
