Social Media Can Help In Weight Loss

Social media can provide some helpful tools for losing weight.

People trying to keep their New Year’s resolutions to drop a few pounds or simply get rid of the weight they gained over the holidays can find some helpful tools on social media.

“Social support is always important with lifestyle changes,” says Willo Wisotsky, PhD, health psychologist at the Center for Weight Management at Syosset Hospital. “As human beings, we crave a sense of belonging and acceptance. When someone is working on developing ‘their inside,’ it is only a complement to your journey to have social support running besides you, cheering you on.”

Dr. Wisotsky recognizes the “tremendous” benefits that social media provides to weight loss and lifestyle changes. Using professional platforms allows a user to pick up an “additional layer of support,” and feels a “sense of community” while online.

“There are times when someone doesn’t feel supported in either their home or personal social networks and would lean on the ‘functional’ social media resources to aid in obtaining their goals.”

While weight loss can be difficult, Dr. Wisotsky doesn’t recommend relying solely on online support. She says people should seek professional support that is appropriate for their overall health and safety.

“The support offered in person cannot be replaced solely online,” Dr. Wisotsky says.”In person support brings the humanistic, behavior medicine component that is necessary in healthcare to optimize our goals and health outcomes. Social media helps with the reinforcement and external support, when utilized appropriately.”
