Syosset Resident, NYPD Detective John M. Mannion Passes Away

 John M. Mannion, an NYPD detective and resident of Syosset, passed away on Aug. 10 at the age of 80. He and his wife have lived in Syosset since 1964.

“My father was a wonderful human being”, said daughter Maryanne Mannion. “He was everything a father could and should be. He was understandable, dependable and an excellent problem solver”. 

Mannion was born in Manhattan in the early 1930s. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Navy on the USS Daly. In 1955, he began his career as NYPD police officer. In 10 years, Mannion made detective 2^nd degree. 

In 1974, Mannion retired from the NYPD, and began a 23-year career as Chief Security Officer for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. 

“My father was a workaholic - there was nothing in life he loved to do more,” said Maryanne. 

Mannion’s position at KLM was unique. He oversaw all operations from Canada to the Canary Islands. 

“He dealt with any and everything; from terrorist threats, gold bars to missing animals, and nothing ever caught him off guard”, said Maryanne. 

At KLM, Mannion also provided security for the Dutch Royal family. He and the family grew very close over the years. The family took great solace in Mannion’s professionalism. The family sent flowers and a wonderful letter of praise to Mannion’s funeral. 

Mannion married his late wife Mary on Aug. 3, 1957. Mary died of breast cancer on July 29, 2007, sadly only four days shy of the couples 50^th anniversary. Mary was a registered nurse at the Syosset Hospital, until it closed in the 80's.

“(Mary) was an amazing mother, wonderful wife and took great pride in her career as a nurse," said Maryanne. 

Mannion and his late wife Mary raised four children. Tragically, their eldest son John Jr. passed away in a car accident in ‘77.  

Aside from work, Mannion loved spending time with his family and especially around his children. He enjoyed watching golf tournaments on television and passionately rooted for the New York Yankees. 

Mannion was the loving father of Maryanne Mannion, E. Tara Cornelious, Michael S. and the late John M. Jr. Fond father-in-law of Derrick Cornelious. Cherished grandfather of Gabrielle Mara and Mikaela Mara Cornelious. Dear brother of Rosemary Kieran and the late Thomas Mannion and Virginia Shine. His funeral was held at the , Inc. of Syosset, 79 Berry Hill Rd.

The funeral Mass took place at , Syosset. Mannion was laid to rest at the Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
