Syosset Then and Now: Touchdown

What year did this team hit the field?

Time for some pigskin trivia, Syosset!

Last week, we asked readers to tell us why the pictured men were digging near Syosset High School.

Patch reader rich correctly identified the photo, writing:

This appears to be a crew that dug out sand from LIRR property which was then sent westward for use in construction projects in new york city. This led to the formation of the "valley" and "the swamp" that still exists to the southwest corner of the syosset high school fields (by Hap Harris ballfield)

Patch reader Papa Tom added:

Rich is correct. This photo is from the Robert Emory LIRR photo collection at Stony Brook University. The sand excavated from this site created the "mountain" on which Jamaica Station now sits.

Thanks to rich and Papa Tom for their comments!

This week, we'd like you to guess what year this photo was taken in honor of Homecoming. We'll tell you that the photo was taken at Village Elementary and that they attended high school at the Woodbury School, according to Syosset Scrapbook.

Give us your best historical guesses in the comments and we'll see you at Homecoming on Saturday!
