Alzheimer's Association Preps for 'Meeting of the Minds' Conference

"Meeting of the Minds," scheduled for June 9 in Tarrytown, is the region's first conference on dementia.

Meeting of the Minds, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association- Hudson Valley, NY Chapter, will take place on Tuesday, June 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree Tarrytown, 455 South Broadway in Tarrytown.

Below is a release about the event from its organizers:

“During a drive along the Hudson last year my mom, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s three years earlier, said, ‘Oh, Jujube. I’ll never forget this summer.’ The reality that she would, in fact, forget that drive and all of our times together struck me with an almost physical pain, but I managed to respond with, ‘I’ll never forget it either, Sweetie Pie.’ And I haven’t forgotten. Not forgetting is what everyone who cares for or about someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia owes to those who have, are suffering with or will suffer from those conditions.” - Julie Mihaly

Meeting of the Minds, the first annual Hudson Vally Regional Dementia Conference, is a triumph of not forgetting. It’s a day-long event filled with lectures, exhibits and breakout sessions aimed at providing professionals, caregivers, family, friends and those with early stage dementia with expert and cutting-edge information, education, tools and support. Nothing that concerns a better life for those with dementia, or those who care for them, has been forgotten.

“We hear people [with Alzheimer’s] say, ‘I’m still here,’ and if you hear it, you start to have a relationship with them.” So says conference keynote speaker, Dr. John Zeisel, whose revolutionary approach to the treatment of those with dementia calls on creative, positive engagement rather than the use of mind numbing drugs. Also speaking at the event will be Teepa Snow, a nationally lauded occupational therapist and dementia education specialist whose humor and ability to put herself in the position of those with dementia has helped her develop a uniquely effective approach to care giving. Dr. Keith Fargo, Alzheimer’s Association expert in science programs, will offer updates on the latest research and clinical programs.

Breakout sessions at the conference will offer information and advice on how to live well with dementia, how to handle legal and financial issues, how to manage stress, how to deal with family dynamics, how to keep those with dementia safe at home, and many of the other issues that factor into the lives of those with dementia.
