Another Wrong-Way Driver: Police Say Drunk Man Slammed Head-On into Car on Bronx River Parkway

The crash occurred in Yonkers just after midnight Monday.

A 23-year-old White Plains man, who county police say was intoxicated at the time, drove the wrong way onto the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers and slammed head-on into another car.

No injuries were reported, but the incident marks the latest in a disturbing trend of wrong-way drivers on Westchester County roadways, one recent crash claimed the life of a New York City Police detective.

Arrested in Monday’s crash was Hatsuo A. Jefferson, said county police:

The incident occurred at 12:17 a.m. when a woman driving a 2001 Mercedes was entering the entrance ramp to the northbound Bronx River Parkway from the eastbound Cross County Parkway. A 1997 Honda Civic was coming up the ramp the wrong way and collided with her car. The driver of the Civic then drove around her vehicle and fled.

The woman, a 58-year-old Beacon resident, was not injured.

Westchester County Police responded to the area and stopped the heavily damaged Honda Civic on the southbound Bronx River Parkway at Bronx River Road.

Jefferson was charged with the following misdemeanors:

  • Driving While Intoxicated
  • Reckless Driving
  • Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident
  • Driving the Wrong Way

He was held overnight and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in Yonkers City Court, according to county police.
