Bear roaming around neighborhood--link to DEC presentation: what to do
A bear was recently seen off Jackson Ave and in Dobbs Ferry
This is the time of year that Black Bears can be found roaming our area. In recent days a Black Bear was seen at Clarewood off of Jackson Ave and in Dobbs Ferry. Two years ago I invited the NYS DEC to advise the Town Board and the community what to do if one spots a black bear and how to resolve a conflict.
Emily Carrollo of the NYS DEC said that are about 5,000 to 8,000 black bears in NYS. During June and July Bears sometimes roam to our area. Bears frequently find food left outside including pet food, bird feeder and garbage. Recommendation: don't leave food outside your home.
If one comes in contact with a bear one should clap ones hand, bang pots and pans or use an airhorn to make noise. Usually the Bear will retreat.
The following link is a presentation made to the Greenburgh Town Board from the NYS DEC. The presentation is very informative.
