Black Women's March Prevented From Crossing Cuomo Bridge Saturday

Organizers drove to Nyack to continue the rally.

TARRYTOWN, NY — Protesters were blocked from marching across the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge Saturday, but some participants felt they were heard anyway. The Black Women’s March, organized by 100Sistas and Black Lives Matter Hudson Valley, was declared an unlawful assembly by state police, even though the state police said it supports the right to peacefully march and express freedom of speech.

About 100 marchers were met by police at the barricaded entrance of Exit 9 in Tarrytown where many of the participants were ready to be arrested if need be, lohud.com said.

There were no reported arrests or injuries, and the protesters drove to Nyack for the second part of the rally.

A Thruway Authority spokesman said before the rally that the state had reached out to organizers to talk about safety concerns and see if there could be an alternative to walking on a busy highway and in an active construction zone.

Organizers had set up a GoFundMe page to pay for motorized wheelchairs and bail, which has raised more than $8,000.
