Your healthcare surrogate is the person you name to make medical decisions and to speak for you if you are unable to do so for yourself. On Tuesday, May 20, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center will host a special workshop, Choosing Your Healthcare Surrogate - What You Need to Know, at 10 am in the hospital auditorium. Registration to attend is required.

This session will explore the important issues of:

·  Who needs a healthcare surrogate and why?
·  How do you decide w ho should play this important role in your life - your next of kin, other relatives or a trusted friend?
·  What factors should you take into consideration in appointing your healthcare surrogate?
·  What are the essential conversations you need to have with that person?
·  How does a healthcare surrogate differ from a living will or written advance directives?
·  What should you consider if you have been asked to be a healthcare surrogate for someone else?

Sherrie Dulworth, R.N., a healthcare consultant and freelance writer, will lead the session. She is a former Intensive Care Unit nurse who has written about end-of-life topics and other public health issues. She can also speak from personal experience, as she was a healthcare surrogate for a close friend for the last nine years of his life.
