Elmsford Elementary Schools Participate in Read Across America

Teachers across the Elmsford Union Free School District’s two elementary schools will forego the use of digital devices for at least part of the time this week as the district celebrates Read Across America, a nationwide initiative created by the National Education Association that encourages children to take up a good book and enjoy a literary journey.

Part of the reading celebration includes celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2, which means that students in both schools will spend a good deal of time reading his books as well as additional works from other well-known authors.

At the Carl L. Dixson Primary School, students began the week dressed in either PJs or other comfortable clothing while listening to Dr. Seuss’ Sleep Book.

Different books are being selected throughout the week to coincide with various themes. For example, on Tuesday, students will read Green Eggs and Ham while dressed in green. On Wednesday, they will read Wacky Wednesday as they wear mismatched clothes. On Thursday, they will wear their favorite silly hat while listening to The Cat in the Hat, and on Friday, the children will listen to Fox in Socks while wearing silly or mismatched socks.

At the Alice E. Grady Elementary School, Librarian Kim Sparber will read from a variety of Dr. Seuss books, including the school’s favorite Dr. Seuss book, What Pet Should I Get?

Teachers are encouraging students to bring their own books to school, in addition to a favorite stuffed animal. Other activities that are being planned in coordination with the initiative include partnering with a buddy, researching Dr. Seuss’ books and other favorite authors as well as selecting a book from the school’s online collection.

“Read Across America is a great chance to have fun and focus on the importance of literacy as a school community,” said Superintendent Joseph Ricca.

“Our outstanding teachers have helped to turn this into a true celebration for our students.”
