There was a real sense of camaraderie amongst students at Alexander Hamilton Jr./Sr. High School May 24th as the teens engaged in a number of community service tasks, part of the school’s annual Leadership Day initiative.

Volunteer activities included painting various walls and handrails, planting flowers, organizing the school’s theatrical supplies and making crafts for youngsters at the Carl L. Dixson School.

In the early morning sunshine, several students could be seen in front of the school on their knees planting red and white New Guinea Impatiens while others took off on foot to participate in a cleanup of the Saw Mill River trail.

At the back of the school, a group of students assembled one of three bike racks obtained through a grant from the Action for Healthy Kids organization.

In some of the classrooms, students were busy assembling a craft project for youngsters called “Apple Tree Addition,” while others were making paper crafts for local merchants to display on their windows.

Students in Tom Blondel’s art class busied themselves painting old drum barrels, using the school colors red, black and white as decoration. The barrels, when fully dry, will be placed in various places throughout the high school campus.

AHHS Principal Joseph Engelhardt said the event was a great way to instill a sense of purpose and meaning in the student body.

“I was so impressed and proud of all our students and the dedication and hard work that they demonstrated for their school and community,” said Mr. Engelhardt. “Hats off to all the teachers, especially Richard MacLeish and Rob Jacoby, who worked hard planning and organizing the event for our entire school community.”
