First Fall Week of SHFC Play

Photos: All Reds with their coaches in goal; Bandits in their first game as a team; soggy Fusion after their win; United at Tiger Tune-Up.

The Sleepy Hollow Football Club kicked off its first week of games in its inaugural season as an independent club. With 21 teams and more than 275 players, SHFC is one of 45 clubs in the Westchester Youth Soccer League, which holds 10 games each in fall and spring across Westchester and neighboring counties. Last year, SHFC, playing under Rivertowns United, saw unprecedented success among its boys and girls teams. Going independent this year, SHFC is hoping to build upon this momentum and have a great year!

Many thanks to the volunteer coaches, dedicated parents and talented young players for serving as the foundation for the SHFC. Check out how the teams did this week!

2010 Boys All Reds travelled to the Edgemont Jaguars. In the photo, the y are looking pretty happy after their first game and first win, 8-3. The boys were simply awesome and booked 96 passes! They are coached by Gary Fairley, Oladipo Ashiru and Aaron Lucchetti. The All Reds travel to the White Plains White on Sunday September 16.

2010 Girls Bandits, playing in their first season, and coached by Mike Glynn, Michelle DeFillipis and Mike Levine had a successful first game, defeating the Castleford Pumas 4-0. In their first week of play, the Bandits displayed great effort, teamwork, communication and sportsmanship, looking forward to their September 16th game away against the Chappaqua Blue.

2009 Boys United are coached by Gary Fairley, Kurt Pisani and Eric Valenti. In the photo, they are at the White Plains Tiger Tune-Up on Sept 8 getting some last minute strategic instructions. It was some really tough competition but United is now ready for a fun season. They will travel to the Alba Bobcats on Sunday September 16.

2009 Boys Red Lions hosted the Manhattan Sevilla. The score is not available. The Red Lions are coached by Brad Scheller and will host the Rye Raiders at Pocantico Hills School field at 11am on Sunday, September 16.

2009 Girls Red Fury coached by Katie McMahon defeated the LMFC Blue Rockets 6-3 for their season opener. The girls had a great first half with strong passing between Maeve Yox, Erin Arnegger, Rachel Richardson and Maiyumi Marcus-Kanesaka which resulted with Maeve Yox's first goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Rockets were successful in scoring twice against the Fury, but Grace McGovern landed her first career goal from an assist by Yox. The teams were tied 2-2 at the half.

The Fury came out of the half fired up and ready to score again. Meghan McMahon, Maeve Yox, Erin Arnegger, Swara Ketkar, Dianelly Tovar, Grace McGovern and Rachel Richardson all took shots on goal. Erin Arnegger put the Fury on top again with scoring her first goal of the season. Meghan McMahon then secured the win by successfully scoring 3 goals, with an assist by Erin Arnegger.

The Fury couldn't have won without strong defensive plays by Sofia Cruz, Breanne Rodriguez Kate Masters and Charlotte Spiridakis. Meghan McMahon and Maiyumi Marcus-Kanesaka played goal. The Red Fury play the Wolfgang Lady Wolves next week at Pocantico Hills.

2008 Girls Red Comets coached by Sven Armster and Joe Block were defeated 5-0 by the Munay Spirit. They travel to the Quickstrike Patriots on Sunday September 16.

2008 Boys Fusion travelled to the Eastchester Typhoon and went quickly down 1-0. In dreary conditions, Fusion brought offensive pressure from Jezrael Panama and Ian Papadopoulos, enabling Jack Zhunio to score two goals in quick succession. Eastchester then scored again with a high shot into the top corner of Fusion’s goal. An offensive push lead to a speedy goal from Kieran Degen, and a few minutes later, a persistent Dylan Pasato got one past the Typhoon’s goalie to lead 4-2 at halftime.

Fusion showed great cohesion in the second half and Coaches George Papadopoulos and Michael Degen were pleased to see some nice passing and field utilization. The speed and accurate passes of Sean Mackiewicz set up Raul Socualaya for a strong shot rolling off the goalie’s fingers. Typhoon scored their third, but were answered quickly by a looping midfield shot from Zhunio hat-trick third goal. Strong defensive efforts by Justin Paute, Aiden Lee and Edwin Dutan kept Typhoon from spending too much time in scoring position.

Fusion took on two new players this fall season. Bruno Flores played a strong defensive role in his first outing and had a beautiful shot on goal which went just wide. Jaiden Brito rotated between several positions, showing good field awareness and team play.

Dylan Largo played as Fusion’s goalie the whole game, blocking several attempts and helping to keep the score in Fusion’s favor. With a 6-3 win under their belts, Fusion looks to their next game, Sunday at 3pm against the Pelham Pirates at Hackley School Field.

2008 Boys River Sharks coached by Ed Greenberg, Gerardo Soto and Michael Glynn hosted the Don Bosco Hawks Hurricanes, winning 2-1. The River Sharks will travel to the Shrub Oak Fusion on Sunday September 16.

2007 Girls Blaze, playing in the U12 Tier-1 WYSL Division, won their first game on Sunday afternoon against the Somers Cosmos 6 - 1. The Blaze was down early when 14 minutes into the game a diving stop by goalie Emily Aridas was insufficient to prevent a Somers' shot from inside the Goalie Box. Ellie Fox scored the first goal off the Blaze season six minutes later on an unassisted long range shot. Gemma Fante put the Blaze ahead two minutes later with the assist going to Kayla McGuigan and the score remained 2 - 1 Blaze at the Half.

Gabby Disney scored the third goal of the game on a long left-footed kick, reminiscent of her goal in the Westchester Cup last Spring. Kayla McGuigan dribbled past three different defenders less than two minutes later and scored her first goal of the season, putting the Blaze ahead 4 - 1 for Coach John Sutherland. Julissa Segarra assisted on Gemma Fante's second goal of the game with less than five minutes left in the game. Two minutes later, Lizzie Molina, Julianna Marvin, and Zoey Murphy each earned an assist on some deft passing to to Gemma who completed her Hat Trick with a booming kick within the goalie box. The four girls had six crisp passes between them as they executed the last successful attack of the game. The Blaze played perfect defense in the second half with Meghan O'Hanlon teaming with Blaze newcomer Maggie Yalmokas to constantly challenge while the other circled back against any attacker who made it past midfield. Thanks to midfielders Penny McVey and another Blaze rookie, Sammie Marvin, not many opponents did make it past midfield.

2007 Boys Dynamo coached by Alberto Blanco fell 6-0 to the Eastchester Titans. They host the Somers Galaxy on Sunday, September 16 at 1:30pm at Hackley Field.

2007 Boys Dutchmen coached by Howard Allen and Pat Grimes tied the Manhattan Cosmos 1-1 at home on the Hackley School Field. They travel to the Castleford Mercury on Sunday, September 16.

2006 Boys Warriors fell to the Port Chester Mustangs 4-1 in an exciting back and forth game. The Warriors had nice stretches of good play and coaches Chris Junge, Todd Dorman and Colin Gallagher are looking forward to building on it.

2005 Girls Cyclones are off to a great start with a 2-1 victory over the West Side Red Bulls. Through teamwork they dominated much of the game, using the skills and strategies they have been working on to complete 130 passes. Both Shea Bertolacci and Isabelle Murphy did an outstanding job in defense, being first to the ball and feeding our midfield and strikers. Thalia Tsilibes controlled the midfield beautifully. She also took the ball from midfield, and dribble through the competition to successfully score the first goal. Our newest player Caroline Didden, assimilated into the team seamlessly, providing a cross that was put into the net by Diana Cordero. We loved watching them play Sunday!

2005 Boys Legends fell behind early to long-time rivals Scarsdale on a damp, but beautiful day in Scarsdale. The boys focused on their passing, moving and resolute defending and turned the game around, equalizing before the half, and scoring 5 without reply in the 2nd. Kenneth finished with a hat trick, Nikhil with a goal and lots of assists, Massimo headed a goal in his rookie season (?) and Alex showed that his left is for more than standing on! Cooper made a fine debut in goal and Aiden and Juan (thanks, Red Devils) deputized for injured duo Julien and Kieran. All in all an excellent start to the season with all the summer work (thanks Coach Herb) paying off big time.

2005 Boys Red Devils won 4-2 against the Pelham Hotspurs. They travel to the Harrison Revolution this Sunday. They are coached by Francisco Mendieta, Mark Taylor and Cedric Smith.

2004 Boys Argentina coached by Luis Lewis hosted the Mahopac Titans, winning 7-1. Match highlights can be found at https://youtu.be/n_IZzxtpeW4
