Elmsford Students Raise Money for Hurricane Harvey Victims

Schools hit by Hurricane Harvey to Receive Supplies, thanks to Grady School Students

Schools in Texas and Louisiana that were affected by Hurricane Harvey will reap the benefit of the fundraising efforts of students at the Alice E. Grady Elementary School in the Elmsford Union Free School District who raised close to $150 for three different projects.

The drive, organized by math teacher Barrie Hittner, was completed through Donors Choose, an online funding platform that encourages teachers to request the materials and experiences they need most for their classrooms.

The Grady students helped fully fund two projects and gave $20 to another. Their generosity will help purchase sports equipment for one school and arts materials and activities supplies for two other schools.

Ms. Hittner explained that the idea for the fundraiser came up during a faculty meeting. Notes were sent home with students asking for donations. A container was also placed in the school’s main office where staff and students could contribute.

“It is very rewarding that we were able to help the schools we did,” said Ms. Hittner. “Perhaps we will be able to something more later in the year.
