Grand Jury Indicts Mom Accused of Leaving Baby to Drown in Tub

Police said she was absent from the bathroom for "an unreasonable amount of time."

KINGSTON, NY — A grand jury in Ulster County indicted a Marlboro mother who was accused of letting her 10-month-old daughter drown.

Kayla Pagan, 26, was charged with felony criminally negligent homicide and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child, Hudson Valley News Network said.

New York State Police said Pagan was going to give her toddler a bath July 8, but left the baby unsupervised in the bathroom.

Police said she was absent from the bathroom for “an unreasonable amount of time” while the bathtub continued to fill with water, and the baby drowned.

When the father of the child got home from work, he found the infant in the bathtub and attempted to administer CPR.

The child was taken by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh where she was pronounced dead.

Time Warner Cable News said Pagan is being still being held in Ulster County Jail until her next appearance in court.
