Greenburgh Considers Additional Car Dealerships on Central Avenue

A public hearing on the proposal could be held in late May.

Which would you prefer in your neighborhood, new multi-family housing developments or additional car dealerships?

The question is hypothetical, but Greenburgh residents, particularly those in Edgemont near Central Avenue may be faced with such a decision.

Recently, the town’s Planning Board issued a positive recommendation to allow new car dealerships to operate on Central Avenue, according to Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.

Currently, the town’s code “only allows pre-existing motor vehicle sales uses and motor vehicle sales lots but did not allow new dealerships on Central Avenue.”

Edgemont residents ”have expressed concern about the impact new multi-family housing would have on their school district,” Feiner says, so he considers modern car dealerships as a better option for the avenue, namely that they are “attractive looking buildings,” and they “generate significant tax dollars to the school district and town.”

And since they are businesses and not homes, there are no added children or extra expenses to the school district, he adds.

A public hearing on the proposal could take place as early as the May 27 Town Board meeting, which could mean a possible approval in June.
