Hair mishaps thanks to Hollywood

Given my expertise, there is a fine line between trend and individuality when it comes to hair trends. There comes a moment in a woman's life when we all just need a change.  O.k., maybe more moments than we can count.   I have heard time and time again the following.  "After I'm married please chop my hair off", "I'm getting divorced so please make me a redhead like Deborah messing", "I'm  going through menopause so cut my hair like Anne Hathaway.  I can't stand to have hair in my face, " and the most requested of all, " Make me look like Kim kardashian."  So here's my outlook.  There is no reason to chop your hair off the day after you get married. Your fiancé became your husband for more reasons than one. I'm sure your luscious locks is on his top five list of things he loves about you.     Divorce is a nightmare. I get it. In the same sentence, Deborah  Messing makes for one very beautiful redhead.  She also has porcelain skin, prominent features, and doesn't have to change her whole makeup palette to make her hair color work for her.    Menopause. I have heard that living through your worst nightmare is better than experiencing this. With that being said, please do not turn yourself into reflection of Anne Hathaway also known as  the "adolescent boy" look.  Relax, take a deep breath, and we will find something that works.  Kim Kardashian. A dashing beauty. Annoyingly perfect  looking. Symmetrical features comes at a cost.  This includes monthly plastic surgeons with injectables, 24 hour hairstylists, and makeup artists to boot.    There is a moral to this story. First off, embrace yourself.  I am a true believer that there is beauty in everyone. You may have the most beautiful eyes.  Opt for a side bang to make them pop.  Your neck is long and you have an oval face? Be daring and go for an inverted bob.  There's nothing sexier to a man than a naked neck.  As far as hair color choices, leave the US weekly cut outs for recycling.   It is our job as hairstylists to find the perfect look for you! It is our obligation to keep up with the latest trends yes! But it does not mean what looks good on one person will look good on you!  There is a science to this profession. Undertones, skin pigments, face shapes, and lifestyle should all come into play. Let us do the dirty work, research and educate OURSELVES to keep you from making  impulsive decisions. Beware of walking into a salon and a hairstylist says "you want a change? Awesome! I just learned the Miley Cyrus haircut. Why don't we try it on you." At this point you have every right to get up, tell them you have the stomache flu, and run! Run as fast as you can!   Hair is the only accessory that you can not remove at night. It is wonderful to be inspired by Hollywood but don't be consumed by it when it comes to hair. After all, there is only one you!
