Healthy Life Series Continues in June 2014 at Phelps

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's Healthy Life series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for June follows:

Monday, June 2 - Look Good . . . Feel Better This free 2-hour program teaches beauty techniques to women going through cancer treatment. Includes a makeup and hair consultation and a complimentary makeup kit and wig to take home. Held the first Monday of the month from 6 - 8 pm at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 755 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow in room 545. Registration is required. Tuesday, June 3 - How Do I Pay for Long-Term Care? Planning With or Without Long-Term Care Insurance A program on planning for the future for people in the early stages of retirement or already retired. Wednesday, June 4 - Mind Games is a free activity and a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning by playing board games and computer games that stimulate memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow in the Boardroom (park in back of the hospital) from 2 - 3:30 pm on the first Wednesday of every month. Wednesdays, June 4 and 18 - Blood Pressure Screenings Conducted the first and third Wednesday mornings of every month at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow from 9:30 - 11:30 am in the Walkway Conference Room. Monday, June 9 - Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) - Silent Reflux Screening
Changes in voice, throat clearing, mucus in the throat with discomfort, chronic cough not responding to medications, and swallowing problems are all symptoms of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR). In addition, chronic asthma, recurrent sinusitis, dental disease and even cancer can all be caused or exacerbated by LPR. Screenings conducted by Craig H. Tuesday, June 10 - Better Breathers Club - The Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group welcomes those with pulmonary fibrosis to learn and share with others, 12 noon - 1 pm in the Pulmonary Lab (B Level) at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Wednesday, June 11 - Snoring Screening for Kids Does your child snore loudly? Does he/she have interruptions in breathing at night that worry you? Does your child seem constantly tired despite having a good night's sleep? Is he/she having trouble concentrating in school or at home or having behavioral issues that may be related to sleep disturbance? If you answered yes, bring your child to this pediatric snoring screening at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. From 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. Thursday, June 12 - Osteoporosis Support The Phelps Osteoporosis Center offers free monthly educational programs for osteoporosis patients the second Thursday of the month. Attendees will become more knowledgeable about osteoporosis, learn nutritional guidelines to improve bone health, practice bone-strengthening exercise routines, and develop techniques to compensate for skeletal limitations. Thursday, June 12 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. The group meets monthly, except for August and December, 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level) at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Thursdays, June 12 and 26 - Afternoon Bereavement Support Group An ongoing support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one meets from 2 - 3:30 pm in the Phelps Hospice office, located on the Phelps campus in the James House. Led by Bess Steiger, LCSW, bereavement coordinator. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Suggested donation: $10 per session. Call 914-366-3325 for information.

Tuesday, June 17- Senior Steps includes health screenings and special events for seniors. The club meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00-11:30 am at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 755 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, Room 225. Registration is required. Call 914-366-3937.

Monday, June 23 - Chronic Cough Screening People often have a chronic cough despite numerous doctor visits, medications, and diagnostic tests. Coughing associated with throat clearing, voice changes, trouble swallowing, nighttime cough, and vocal spasms may be caused by chronic laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. Alternatively, some people feel a frequent tickle in the throat that precedes a cough, or a dry spot or dryness in the throat, which may be caused by irritation of a nerve. Screenings will be conducted by Craig H. Zalvan, MD, laryngologist, Medical Director of the Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders at Phelps from 8:45 - 10 am. Registration is required.
