Healthy Life Series Continues in June at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center

Phelps offers the community a wide range of free programs on health-related subjects, screenings and support groups

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center’s Healthy Life series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for June follows:

Monday, June 1 - Look Good . . . Feel Better® is a free 2-hour workshop that teaches beauty techniques to women undergoing cancer treatment. The program includes a hair consultation with a professional stylist and a makeup consultation with a cosmetologist. Attendees can take home a complimentary wig and a make-up kit donated by cosmetic companies. The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, The National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. Tuesday, June 2 - Planning for Your Future: How to Avoid the 10 Greatest Gaffes in Estate Planning This is the final installment of a three-part series for people in the early stages of retirement or already retired. Wednesday, June 3 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games. In the Boardroom from 2 -3:30 pm. Call 914-366-3937 to register.

Wednesdays, June 3 and June 17 - Blood Pressure Screenings Conducted the first and third Wednesday mornings of every month from 9:30 – 11:30 am in the Walkway Conference Room. Appointments are required. To make an appointment, call 914-366-3220.

Wednesday, June 10 - LSVT BIG: Movement Therapy for Parkinson’s Patients

The LSVT BIG program is a physical therapy program designed to improve the major motor skills of people with Parkinson’s disease by retraining their movements. The exercises will be led by Jennifer Teyfel-Freestone, PT, DPT, CLT-LANA, CSCS; Leslie Sims, PT; and Ronald Lynch, PT, who are all LSVT BIG-certified physical therapists. All exercises specifically address an increase in motion of the arms and legs, as well as turning of the trunk and walking. The program is designed to increase walking speed, improve balance and enhance quality of life. In the Auditorium from 11 am – 12 pm. Call 914-366-3758 to register.

Thursday, June 11 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors that meets monthly, except for August and December. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a topic of interest to seniors and a light exercise program. This month participants will receive information on dental issues related to older adults. The group meets from 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level). Call 914-366-3937 to register.

Thursday, June 11 - Osteoporosis Support and Education A free monthly group program for individuals with osteoporosis, providing education on nutrition, exercise (weight-bearing, strengthening and balance) and activities of daily living. The sessions are held from 11 am to 12:30 pm the second Thursday of the month in the Boardroom (C Level). Call 914-366-2270 to register.

Thursdays, June 11 and June 25 – Bereavement Support Group An ongoing support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 2 – 3:30 pm in the James House. Led by Bess Steiger, LCSW, bereavement coordinator. Suggested donation: $10 per session. Call 914-366-3325 or email bsteiger@pmhc.us for information.

Tuesday, June 16 – Senior Steps offers health screenings for seniors. Senior Steps meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00-11:30 am in various locations throughout the hospital. For more information, call 914-366-3937.
