Healthy Life Series Continues In March
Phelps Hospital offers a wealth of health education programs throughout the year. Programs during the month of March are featured here

All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for March is as follows:
Saturday, March 2 - Totsaver Program This 3-hour class includes the pediatric component of the American Heart Association CPR for Family and Friends. Due to the physical demands of the class, pregnant women in their third trimester may wish to consult their physician for advice on participation. A CPR handbook is mailed out upon registration.1st Saturday of each month, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Hoch Center for Emergency Education, 755 North Broadway, Suite 200. Cost is $55 per person. Wednesday, March 6 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to stimulate various cognitive functions memory, problem-solving, and focus. If you are having trouble remembering things or feel that you are easily confused, come join the fun! In the Boardroom at Phelps, from 2:00 – 3:30 pm. Thursday, March 7 - Preventable, Treatable, Beatable! Join us to honor Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with a panel discussion on colorectal cancer risk assessment, screening, genetic testing, guideline guidance, alarm symptoms/signs and state-of-the-art treatment right in your neighborhood. Speakers: Dr. Thomas Weber, Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Peter Stein, Gastroenterologist, Tawanna St Lewis, Genetic Counselor. Phelps Auditorium, 701 N Broadway, 6:00-7:00 pm. Friday, March 8 - Alzheimer’s Support Group Alzheimer’s disease is life changing for both those who are diagnosed and those close to them. The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group provides a safe place for caregivers, family, and friends of persons with dementia to meet and develop a mutual support system. Thursday, March 14 - The Breakfast Club, designed especially for seniors, includes a free breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program to improve strength and balance. It’s also a great opportunity for older adults to socialize with their peers. At Phelps Hospital Cafeteria, 701 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, 8:30 am. Thursday, March 14 - Osteoporosis Program Osteoporosis Education and Support Program is for people concerned about bone loss and fractures. Physicians, therapists and dietitians meet to discuss risk factors, causes, proper body mechanics and medication options. The sessions are held from 10:30 - 11:30 am the second Thursday of the month in the Phelps Boardroom (C Level). Closest parking is near the Auditorium entrance. Tuesday, March 19 - Senior Steps (Cognitive Screening) Senior Steps is a program offering free health screenings once a month. Seniors can attend one of the following screenings: balance, cognition, hearing and more or attend a Medicare counseling program. Appointments are required. 10:00 – 11:30 am. Tuesday, March 19 - Cancer Institute Community Day The Public is welcome to attend a day-long event of activities including, Laughter Yoga, New Patient Orientation, New Patient Chemotherapy Review, Nutrition for the Cancer Patient, Support Session/Speakers from 10:30 am – 4:00 pm. Held in the Conference Room across from Vivo Pharmacy on the Phelps campus 777 North Broadway, 1st Floor, Sleepy Hollow. Wednesday, March 20 - Functional Medicine Functional Medicine Program is a holistic, patient-centered approach to preventing, treating, and reversing chronic disease by identifying and understanding the root causes of the individual’s symptoms and conditions, including genetic predispositions, environmental contributors, and lifestyle factors. Using this model, Stephen Thorp, M.D., will provide a monthly lecture on how individuals can manage and treat pain through non-medicine and non-interventional methods. Each lecture will be immediately followed by an exercise or an introduction to alternative medicine affiliated with pain management. Phelps Hospital in the 755 Building, 4th floor, 9:00 am. Thursday, March 21 - ABCs of Baby Care This class for expectant parents is to help you prepare for your new baby’s arrival. Topics covered included how to diaper and bathe a baby, equipment needed such as a car seat, crib safety, guidelines for safe sleep, newborn characteristics and appearance, general baby care and more. This class is offered once a month. Classes are held at 7:00 pm. Please see registration form for details. Cost is $50 per couple. Diabetes Educational Program for Adults This educational program for adults with diabetes is held periodically at Phelps. Learn what diabetes is, different medications available, how to prevent and manage complications, blood sugar targets, what foods to eat, how to count carbs and much more. Pre-registration and a physician referral are required. There may be a charge for this class, depending on insurance coverage. Please note that attendance at both classes is required. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class This class for expectant parents offers information on how to initiate successful breastfeeding. Topics include milk supply and how milk is made, what to expect from your newborn, latch and positioning, how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk and more. Couples are encouraged to come together. Taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). Cost $50 per couple. The Childbirth Experience/ LaMaze Method This series of classes is designed to cover all aspects of the childbirth experience. We offer information on the following topics: pregnancy, labor, delivery, caesarean section, the newborn, and the techniques of Lamaze childbirth preparation – including exercise, relaxation, breathing, and pharmacologic pain management. Tour and childbirth films are included. Taught by Certified Childbirth Educators on the Phelps Birthing Center nursing staff.
