Healthy Life Series Continues in October at Phelps Hospital

Series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups.

All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for October follows:

Wednesday, October 4 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games. Thursday, October 5 - Speech Therapy for Parkinson’s Patients: Think LOUD, Speak LOUD
Join graduates of LSVT LOUD and learn about this intensive speech therapy program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease with Andrea Bracciante-Ely, MS Sp, CCC-SLP, Senior Speech-Language Pathologist. Six consecutive Fridays, starting October 6 - Tai Chi Classes for Seniors Tai Chi is a graceful form of exercise that helps reduce stress and is beneficial for a variety of other health conditions. Tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements performed in a slow, focused manner, accompanied by deep breathing. Takes place at The Reformed Church of the Tarrytowns, 42 N. Saturdays, starting October 7 – Fall Prevention; A Matter of Balance Many seniors experience fear of falling, and it causes them to restrict their activities. A Matter of Balance, held on 8 consecutive Saturdays, emphasizes practical strategies to reduce this fear and increase activity levels by improving strength, balance and flexibility. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, and change their environment to reduce fall risk factors. Saturday, October 7 - CarFit Event for Older Drivers An individualized 20-minute interactive and educational program designed to improve older drive safety and enable older adults to continue driving for as long as possible. The trained CarFit team, members of Phelps’ Occupational Therapy Department, work with participants to ensure the safest “fit” for drivers and their vehicles. This includes having a clear line of sight over the steering wheel, a properly fitted seat belt, and correctly positioned mirrors to minimize blind spots. CarFit was created by the American Society of Aging in collaboration with AARP, AAA and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Monday, October 9 - Screening Clinic for Chronic Cough Chronic cough is often misdiagnosed as asthma, COPD, bronchitis or sinusitis. If your coughing persists for more than three weeks, this screening is for you. Screening conducted by Craig H. Zalvan, MD, laryngologist, Medical Director of the Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders at Phelps Hospital from 8:30 – 9:30 am. Registration is required. Call (914) 366-3010 to register.

Tuesday, October 10 and Thursday, October 19 - Diabetes Educational Program for Adults This two-session educational program for adults with diabetes is held every month at Phelps. Learn what diabetes is, what medications are available, how to prevent and manage complications, blood sugar targets, what foods to eat, how to count carbs and much more. A physician referral and attendance at both classes is required. There may be a charge for this class depending on insurance coverage. Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Tuesday, October 10 - Better Breathers Club A free, monthly interactive support group for people with breathing disorders, sponsored by Phelps and the American Lung Association. The topic will be “Tips and Tricks for Living with Lung Disease,” presented by Susan DiFabio, RRT, CPFT. This presentation will take place in conjunction with the monthly Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group, sponsored by Phelps and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Participants who use oxygen may switch to the hospital’s supply during the meeting. Light refreshments will be served. Reservations are required. Tuesdays, October 10-November 28 - Bereavement Support Group for Spouses An eight-week bereavement support group for adults who have lost a spouse. Monday, October 11 - Look Good . . . Feel Better® is a free 2-hour workshop that teaches beauty techniques to women undergoing cancer treatment. The program includes a hair consultation with a professional stylist and a makeup consultation with a cosmetologist. Attendees can take home a complimentary wig and a make-up kit donated by cosmetic companies. The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, The National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. Thursday, October 12 - The Breakfast Club The Breakfast Club, designed especially for seniors, includes a free breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. The group meets monthly except for August and December. The group meets from 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level) at Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Thursday, October 12 - Osteoporosis Support and Education A free monthly group program for individuals with osteoporosis, providing education on nutrition, exercise (weight-bearing, strengthening and balance) and activities of daily living. The sessions are held from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm the second Thursday of the month in the Boardroom (C Level) at Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Call 914-366-2270 to register.

Friday, October 13 - Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group Caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Join us the second Friday of each month and receive the emotional, educational and social support needed to successfully care for someone with dementia. Wednesday, October 18 – Controlling the Pain of Arthritic Knees Without Surgery Orthopedic surgeon J. Robert Seebacher, MD, Medical Director of the Phelps Joint Replacement Service, will discuss a non-surgical therapy that often helps people maintain active lifestyles while postponing – or eliminating – the need for knee replacement. Thursday, October 26 - Swallow Screening Do you sometimes feel food or liquid going down the wrong way or coming back up? Does food get stuck? Do you have pain when you swallow? If so, you should attend this free swallow screening. Lynne Gagne-LeBlanc, MS, CCC-SLP; Andrea Bracciante-Ely, MS Sp, CCC-SLP; or Carolyn Bossinas, MS, CCC-SLP are the specialists who will conduct the screening.
