Phelps Hospital’s Healthy Life series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for October is as follows
Wednesday, October 2 - Mind Games 1st Wednesday of the month Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to stimulate various cognitive functions memory, problem-solving, and focus. If you are having trouble remembering things or feel that you are easily confused, come join the fun! 2:00pm in the Boardroom/”C” level. Wednesday, October 2 - The Childbirth Experience/ LaMaze Method This series of classes is designed to cover all aspects of the childbirth experience. We offer information on the following topics: pregnancy, labor, delivery, caesarean section, the newborn, and the techniques of Lamaze childbirth preparation – including exercise, relaxation, breathing, and pharmacologic pain management. Tour and childbirth films are included. Taught by Certified Childbirth Educators on the Phelps Birthing Center nursing staff. If you have already taken the course and wish to sign up for a Lamaze refresher course, call 914-366-3382 for scheduling information. $150 per couple. Classes are offered Wednesdays 7:30 pm-10 pm and weekends (Saturdays) 9 am-4 pm. Full refund for cancellations requested at least 1 week prior to the start of class; 50% refund after that date. Monday, October 7 - Keeping Memory Alive Learn about lifestyle factors that improve brain health. This event takes place on the first Monday of every month at 10:00am in the 755 Building on the fourth floor, Family Medicine Conference Room. Tuesday, October 8 - Demystifying Medicare This presentation of the library system’s Westchester Seniors Out Speaking is perfect for anyone trying to navigate their way through our complicated healthcare system for older adults. It will help those who already have Medicare, as well as people soon to be 65, planning their retirement, or assisting relatives and friends with their medical decisions. The engaging, interactive program outlines the various parts of Medicare and lays out the costs associated with the medical and drug insurance provided by the government and private companies. This event will take place in the Board Room at 6:00pm.
Thursday, October 10 - Osteoporosis Program Osteoporosis Education and Support Program is for people concerned about bone loss and fractures. Physicians, therapists and dietitians meet to discuss risk factors, causes, proper body mechanics and medication options. Thursday, October 10 - Breakfast Club Is a series of breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors. Each program includes a free breakfast, a presentation on healthy lifestyles topic and a light exercise program to improve strength and balance. It’s also a great opportunity for older adults to socialize with their peers. This program will be held at 8:30am - 10:30am in the Cafeteria at Phelps Hospital. 701 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Friday, October 11 - Alzheimer's Caregivers Support Group Alzheimer’s disease is life changing for both those who are diagnosed and those close to them. The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group provides a safe place for caregivers, family, and friends of persons with dementia to meet and develop a mutual support system. Saturday, October 12 - Prenatal Breastfeeding Class This class for expectant parents offers information on how to initiate successful breastfeeding. Topics include milk supply and how milk is made, what to expect from your newborn, latch and positioning, how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk and more. Couples are encouraged to come together. Taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). $50 per couple. Cancellation policy: Full refund for cancellations requested at least 1 week prior to the start of class; 50% refund after that date. This class is offered Saturdays, 10:00am – 2:00pm once a month. Tuesday, October 15 - Senior Steps Senior Steps is a program offering health screenings. Once a month, seniors can attend one of the following screenings: balance, cognition, hearing, hand, incontinence, pulmonary, or Medicare. 10:00am - 11:30am in the 755 building, suite 225. Tuesday, October 15 - Postpartum Support Group This group is to support new mothers. Bring your baby to share and learn in a friendly, supportive environment. Meet other new moms, ask questions, and receive help with breastfeeding and other new baby challenges. Partners and other supportive loved ones are welcome! This support group is led by an International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant. No registration is necessary and there is no cost to attend. This group meets on the third Monday of each month at 11:00am - 12:00pm in the 755 building on the fifth floor, in room 545. Wednesday, October 16 - Functional Medicine Functional Medicine Program is a holistic, patient-centered approach to preventing, treating, and reversing chronic disease by identifying and understanding the root causes of the individual’s symptoms and conditions, including genetic predispositions, environmental contributors, and lifestyle factors. Using this model, the OT department will provide a lecture on sleep hygiene. The lecture will be followed by meditation at 9:00 am at 755 Building, 4th floor in the Family Medicine Residency Conference Room. Thursday, October 17 - ABCs of Baby Care This class for expectant parents is to help you prepare for your new baby’s arrival. Topics covered included how to diaper and bathe a baby, equipment needed, such as a car seat, crib safety, guidelines for safe sleep, newborn characteristics and appearance, general baby care and more. This class is offered once a month. Classes are held at 7:00pm. Please see registration form for details. $50 per couple.
