Healthy Life Series Continues in September at Phelps Hospital
The series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects, numerous health screenings and support groups.

All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for September is as follows:
Tuesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 14 - Diabetes Educational Program for Adults This two-session educational program for adults with diabetes is held every month at Phelps. Learn what diabetes is, what medications are available, how to prevent and manage complications, blood sugar targets, what foods to eat, how to count carbs and much more. A physician referral and attendance at both classes is required. There may be a charge for this class depending on insurance coverage. Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Wednesday, September 6 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games, from 2:00 - 3:30 pm. Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, in the Boardroom. Park behind the hospital and enter through the Auditorium entrance. Saturday, September 9 – Autumn Games for Seasoned Adults 55+ Phelps Hospital and the Town of Mount Pleasant invite Westchester residents 55+ to the first Autumn Games for Seasoned Adults, a unique event with games and athletic challenges of all levels. Join in the fun – be a participant or cheer on your friends and neighbors! Mount Pleasant Community Center, 125 Lozza Drive, Valhalla, from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. September 11, 14, 18, 25, 28 - Prostate Cancer Screenings September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and Phelps is hosting free prostate cancer screenings performed Arno Housman, MD, PC and Jack Hershman, MD, FACS, Chief of Urology. Tuesday, September 12 - Better Breathers Club A free, monthly interactive support group for people with breathing disorders or pulmonary fibrosis sponsored by Phelps, the American Lung Association, and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Participants who use oxygen may switch to the hospital’s supply during the meeting. Light refreshments will be served. Reservations are required. Thursday, September 14 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors that meets monthly, except for August and December. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a topic of interest to seniors and a light exercise program. The group meets from 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level) at Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Call 914-366-3937 to register.
Thursday, September 14- Osteoporosis Support and Education A free monthly group program for individuals with osteoporosis, providing education on nutrition, exercise (weight-bearing, strengthening and balance) and activities of daily living. The sessions are held from 10:45 to 11:30 AM the second Thursday of the month in the Boardroom (C Level). Friday, September 15 - Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group Caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Join us the second Friday of each month and receive the emotional, educational and social support needed to successfully care for someone with dementia. Monday, September 18 – What’s it Like to have a Hip or Knee Replacement? New technologies and advances have made surgery and recovery for hip and knee replacement very different than in the past. Come hear from orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jason Hochfelder and a panel of his patients to learn first-hand what it’s like to have one of these life-changing surgeries. Wednesday, September 20 - Look Good . . . Feel Better® is a free 2-hour program designed for women dealing with hair loss and skin changes from chemotherapy and radiation. You will learn specific techniques to help make the most of your appearance while undergoing treatment. The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, The National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. Friday, September 22 – National Fall Prevention Awareness Day Phelps Hospital, the Town of Mount Pleasant and State Senator Terrence Murphy invite area seniors to attend a Fall Prevention Awareness workshop at the Mount Pleasant Community Center, located at 125 Lozza Drive, Valhalla, NY from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Tuesday, September 26 – Demystifying Medicare This presentation of the library system’s Westchester Seniors Out Speaking is perfect for everyone trying to navigate their way through our complicated healthcare system for older adults. It will help people who have Medicare, those who are soon to be 65 or planning their retirement, and anyone assisting relatives and friends with their medical decisions. This engaging, interactive program outlines the costs associated with the medical and drug insurance provided by the government and private companies.
