LED Lights Tested On New Tappan Zee Bridge

The lights will be able to be configured to minimize impacts on wildlife and plants and create displays for special occasions.

TARRYTOWN, NY — If you were driving near the new Tappan Zee Bridge Feb. 23 after dark, you might have seen a test of the bridge’s night-time illumination.

A preliminary test on more than 20 piers lasted just over an hour, according to information from the Thruway Authority.

The test confirmed that energy was being sent to more than 220 fixtures on the westbound Rockland approach.

Light-emitting-diodes — LEDs — are being used to illuminate the concrete piers and other parts of the bridge, including the eight towers and cable-stay system.

Officials said the LED fixtures have a projected 100,000-hour lifespan, which is roughly triple that of conventional lamps.

Also the LED system will use an estimated 75 percent less energy compared to traditional lighting technology.

The remaining LED fixtures on the westbound piers will be tested by Tappan Zee Constructors in the coming weeks.

The state-of-the-art lighting control system will allow bridge operators to control the span’s structural lighting and brightness to minimize the biological impact on plants and animals, as well as change color and lighting displays on command for special occasions and holidays.
