The Legend Continues: Sleepy Hollow High School Celebrates the Class of 2026

On a beautiful June evening, more than 200 Sleepy Hollow High School seniors gathered one final time on Harold “Doc” Rasbeck Field as members of the Class of 2026. Surrounded by families, educators, friends, and community members, graduates crossed the stage on June 17 during a ceremony filled with reflection, gratitude, and hope for the future.

As the sun cast its golden light across the field, speakers encouraged graduates to look ahead while remaining grounded in the values and relationships that shaped them throughout their journey.

Principal Dr. Deborah Brand reminded students that a meaningful life is built not through recognition or achievement alone, but through the choices people make every day.

“The art of a great life is one where you touch the people around you, where the choices you make are the ones that come from whom you truly want to be,” she said. “Live with intention… make a choice to be fully present. In other words, love the moment, love your life, love yourself, and love the people around you.”

That message of purpose and presence echoed throughout the evening.

Superintendent Dr. Raymond Sanchez challenged graduates to lead with kindness as they enter a world that is constantly changing.

“You'll face challenges, opportunities, and choices that will test who you are,” he said. “And in those moments, I urge you, don't just be nice, be kind. Be kind enough to hold yourself and others accountable. Be kind enough to have hard conversations. Be kind enough to push progress when it's uncomfortable.”

While the ceremony marked the end of one chapter, student speakers focused on the friendships, memories, and community that defined their high school years.

Salutatorian Elliot Bentley encouraged his classmates to appreciate where they came from while embracing what lies ahead in a speech that was equal parts funny and sincere.

He hoped, he said, that in years to come they would barely remember the details of this ceremony, "not because it meant nothing, but because you will all have lives filled with such purpose, love, and success, that high school fades into the soil from which all other achievements grow."

He reminded the class to resist the pull of the rearview mirror and keep their eyes ahead.

“Cherish the memories, the friendships, and the lessons… know that you have this community in your back pocket,” he added.

Valedictorian Thaddeus Kromelis II reflected on personal goals and accomplishments before turning the spotlight toward the collective achievements of his classmates.

“The truth is, this moment is not about who had the best grades, or who hoisted the most trophies or who gets up on this podium to speak,” he said. “There's about 207 people, all equally deserving of praise, who achieved something great together.”

He encouraged his classmates to pursue fulfillment over prestige and to carry forward the bonds they created during their time at Sleepy Hollow.

“When we look back on the Class of 2026 years down the line, we won't remember the individual achievements,” Thaddeus said. “We will remember the memories we made and the community that we created.”

Perhaps the most poetic send-off came from Art and Technology Department Chair Mary Cincotta, herself a Sleepy Hollow graduate, Class of 2008, who connected the graduates' journey to the community's most enduring story.

“You'll never stop feeling the pull of Sleepy Hollow,” she told the graduates. “My final homework assignment is that you carry a piece of us with you, our very own version of the legend of Sleepy Hollow, wherever life may take you.”

As she closed her remarks, Cincotta left the Class of 2026 with a message that perfectly captured the spirit of the evening.

“It might feel like it's coming to an end today, but remember, legends never die. They live on, beyond time, place, and measure.”

And so, as caps flew into the air and cheers echoed across the field, the graduates of Sleepy Hollow High School stepped forward into their next chapter. They left with accomplishments to celebrate, memories to cherish, and a community that will always be part of their story.

After all, as generations of Horsemen have learned before them, the legend of Sleepy Hollow is not a place you leave behind—it is something you carry with you wherever you go.

And their story is just beginning.
