Lois Beverly Alterman, formerly of Tarrytown, passed away on 1/26/24

Lois Beverly Alterman was born February 27,1935 in Paterson, NJ to Samuel and Hilda Hunter where they resided in Caldwell NJ and then Nutley, NJ.

After graduating from Russell Sage College in 1956, she was married to Newton Alterman of the Bronx and moved first to Yonkers, then to Scarsdale (Edgemont HS School District) where they raised their three children. Lois was involved in Cub Scouts, the PTA, as director of the Edgemont Pre-School summer camp and with the Greenville Community Theatre.

Lois had a very rewarding forty-five year career in early childhood education, first as teacher and Director of the YM-YWHA in Mount Vernon, as an adjunct professor at the former Seaton College Yonkers and then at the Shames Early Childhood Center in Tarrytown, first as assistant director, administrative assistant and finally as a music specialist.

After surviving her own breast cancer she volunteered as a leader for the “Reach To Recovery” support group.

After moving to the Edgemont Condos in Tarrytown, Lois enjoyed acting in the condo theatre group, playing bridge, Mahjong and volunteering at Phelps Hospital. She was known for her poetry, often chronicling important events in her life and those of family and friends.

In 2020, she and Newton moved to Alpharetta Georgia, to be near their son. At Village Park, Milton, she again filled her life with numerous roles, including serving multiple terms as President of the Residents’ committee, starting a theatre company, teaching bridge and Mahjong.

Lois is survived by her husband of 67 years, Newton, sons, Steven & wife Nancy, Richard & his wife Nancy) daughter Amy, brother, Barry Hunter and wife Gale, grandchildren Zach, Karina, Tori, Izzy, Sadie and Max and her nieces Abbe Spector, Joan Gorman and nephew Josh Hunter.

Despite struggling with numerous health challenges over her long life, Lois continued to act in service to others and will be remembered by the many children and adults whose lives she touched.

She passed away at home in Georgia on January 26th and her life was celebrated on January 28th at Village Park and February 11th at the Shames JCC in Tarrytown.
