Mobile Science Lab Excites Elmsford Students

Students get comfortable with microscopes and learn about DNA testing, among other topics

A mobile science lab, known as the BioBus, made its way to the Alice E. Grady School in the Elmsford Union Free School District Oct. 27 and got the attention of the school’s sixth-graders.

The bus was made possible by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals as part of the company’s Day for Doing Good service initiative.

Volunteer New York! coordinated the event, which focused on science, technology, engineering and math, also known as STEM.

The mobile bus is equipped with a high-powered microscope and staffed by scientists. Students were excited to board the bus for a series of inquiry-based, hands-on, standards-aligned lab sessions, which were offered throughout the morning.

“We were grateful for the partnership with Volunteer New York! and Regeneron for bringing us these experiences,” said Superintendent Dr. Marc Baiocco, “and we were also excited for the opportunity to provide our students with STEM experiences.”

Students in the fifth and sixth grades had an opportunity to work with volunteers from Junior Achievement, an organization that inspires and prepares young people to succeed in the global economy, as well as the Regeneron volunteers.

Students created posters and played games that offered practical information about the many businesses providing career opportunities for qualified workers, including those in the Elmsford community.

Regeneron volunteers also visited the Carl L. Dixson School, introducing the children to the Westchester Children’s Museum program, Museum Without Walls.
