Cuomo Bridge Second Span To Open By September: Governor

It was a little more than a year ago that the Rockland-bound span was opened to traffic.

TARRYTOWN, NY — If the weather cooperates, it looks as if the eastbound span of the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge will open sometime next month. On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo toured the construction zone of the eastbound span and received a project update from New New York Bridge Project Manager Jamey Barbas.

Cuomo said that, thanks to the work of the women and men building the new bridge, “the project will be completed in mid-September if Mother Nature cooperates.

“People talked for decades about replacing the Tappan Zee Bridge, and now we’re on the cusp of making history,” he said.

“The new bridge will improve traffic flow and maximize the economic potential of the region, and is a symbol of New York’s ability to accomplish big things for the people of this state,” Cuomo said.

The Rockland-bound span was opened for traffic Aug. 24, 2017.

When the 3.1-mile twin-span is completed, there will be eight general traffic lanes, four breakdown and emergency lanes, space for a future bus rapid transit and commuter rail, a bicycle and walking path, cashless tolling and energy-efficient LED lighting.
