No Go For Prepayment Of Property Taxes In Sleepy Hollow

The treasurer and legal counsel of the village made the determination.

SLEEPY HOLLOW, NY — The governor’s executive order allowing the pre-payment and partial payment of local property taxes for 2018 will not be able to help homeowners in Sleepy Hollow. An email from Mayor Ken Wray said that the village’s treasurer and legal counsel reviewed what Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed and determined that prepayment does not apply to the village.

Wray said the governor’s order applies only to counties and towns, so Sleepy Hollow is still prohibited by the state from accepting prepayment.

Furthermore, even if the executive order had included villages, Sleepy Hollow could only accept prepayments once the trustees approved the village’s 2018-19 budget.

Wray said the board cannot responsibly lock the village into a budget in such a short period of time.

“The governor’s executive order is meaningful for counties and towns in NYS that have a fiscal year that begins Jan. 1 and who normally collect taxes in January,” he said.

“As you know, our fiscal year begins June 1. Gov. Cuomo and many in the NYS congressional delegation understand the hurt that this federal tax bill causes to the residents of New York,” Wray said. “This executive order ay alleviate the pain for some.”
