Senator Stewart-Cousins opened the discussion with a brief history of her career in public service to lend context to her legislative goals and political priorities. The dialogue then shifted to topics of importance to both the Senator and the club, including fracking, taxes, education, and ethics reform.

“We’ve achieved great things this legislative session,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “We’ve cut personal income tax rates for middle class New Yorkers to the lowest they’ve been in seventy years and we’ve increased school funding significantly. No discussion of the State would be complete without mentioning the dire need to pass ethics reform legislation. The Senate Democratic Conference has led the effort to push common sense measures like stripping corrupt officials of their taxpayer-funded pensions and limiting outside income for elected representatives. This income-limiting measure passed this session, but the legislature must vote for it again in the upcoming session in order for it to become law. My conference stands strong in our commitment to hold the State to a greater degree of accountability and transparency.”

A lengthy question-and-answer session followed Stewart-Cousin’s talk, but the Senator engaged in a back-and-forth with the seniors throughout her initial speech, encouraging them to offer their opinions and answering any questions they had about the State’s work.
