Oppenheimer- a Hastings connection to the Manhattan Project

James Rainwater won the Nobel Prize. He was involved in the Manhattan Project

James Rainwater, who won the Nobel Prize -he was involved in the Manhattan Project- lived in Hastings. When I first ran for County Legislator 40 years ago I knocked on his door, spent 45 minutes talking with him. He was a very modest, nice, humble man and I spoke with him a few times until he passed. Our historians wrote an article about him.
Thought this is an interesting story -especially since Oppenheimer is in the news as the movie to watch. There may be other residents of Hastings who knew him better than I did who could talk more about his relationship to the village. To this day - I still remember my first conversation with him. I knew who he was when I knocked on his door but he waited till the end of the conversation to mention his Nobel Prize (after I asked). This is the posting on the town website about him:
