Public Schools of the Tarrytowns Receives National Recognition for Music Education Excellence

The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns has once again been recognized as a 2026 Best Community for Music Education by The NAMM Foundation, marking the second consecutive year the district has received this national distinction.

Now in its 27th year, the Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) program celebrates school districts across the country for their commitment to ensuring all students have access to high-quality music education as part of a well-rounded learning experience. In 2026, more than 1,000 school districts and schools nationwide were recognized for their efforts.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our teachers and the strength of our community,” said Gail Persad, Choral Director and Department Chair. “Our program helps students grow not only as musicians, but as people. They develop confidence, leadership, discipline, and a true sense of belonging. Music gives students the opportunity to pursue something they care deeply about and take ownership of their learning.”

Ms. Persad, who has taught in the district for 28 years, noted that the honor speaks to the culture that has been built over time. “I have been a proud music teacher in this district for 28 years, and this award is a reflection of who we are as a community.”

Recipients of the BCME Award are selected through a rigorous application and review process that evaluates key indicators including funding, instructional time, participation, facilities, and community support. All submissions are independently reviewed and verified by WolfBrown, a national leader in arts education research.

Research continues to point to the value of music education in a student’s overall development. Studies have shown that students who participate in music programs often demonstrate growth in areas such as reading and language processing, while also building skills like focus, collaboration, and perseverance. Students involved in music are also more likely to graduate high school and pursue higher education.

There is also strong support for music education among families and educators. Recent findings supported by The NAMM Foundation show that both parents and teachers widely value access to music as an essential part of a student’s school experience.
