Public Schools of the Tarrytowns Secures More Than $10 Million for Clean Energy Upgrades

The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns has been awarded more than $10 million in state funding to support clean energy upgrades across the district, part of a larger investment announced today by Governor Kathy Hochul through the Clean Green Schools Initiative.

Administered by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the initiative provides funding to school districts to implement modern, energy-efficient solutions that reduce energy use, improve air quality, and create healthier learning environments for students and staff.

In Tarrytown, the funding will support a series of upgrades at two school buildings, including:

• Installation of heat pumps to provide clean heating and cooling
• Electrification of hot water systems and kitchen equipment
• Lighting improvements to increase energy efficiency
• Upgraded ventilation and filtration systems to improve indoor air quality
• Integration of clean energy learning opportunities into the curriculum

Altogether, these enhancements are expected to reduce energy use in the district’s buildings by approximately 50 percent.

“This investment represents an important step forward for our district as we continue to create learning environments that support the health, safety, and well-being of our students and staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Raymond Sanchez. “By improving air quality, modernizing our systems, and reducing our environmental impact, we are not only strengthening our facilities, but also reinforcing our commitment to preparing students for a more sustainable future.”

The project will also provide opportunities to connect this work to classroom learning, helping students better understand clean energy and sustainability through real-world applications.

The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns was one of five districts across New York State selected to receive funding through this round of the Clean Green Schools Initiative.NYSERDA first launched the initiative in April 2022 in an effort to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in public schools.

These improvements reflect the district’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, modern, and efficient learning spaces for students and staff. As this work moves forward, the benefits will be felt across the school community through cleaner air, more comfortable classrooms, and a continued investment in a healthier, more sustainable future for Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.
