Quick: Spell 'Vegetarian' and 'Thermostat'
The third and fourth grade winners from Washington Irving can! Congrats to our local winners of Thursday's Junior League Spelling Bee.
Vegetarian and thermostat were the words of the night at Thursday's Spelling Bee competition at .
About 30 student spellers in third, fourth, and fifth grades competed from Tarrytown and Ossining, with about 100 supportive audience members cheering them on.

Washington Irving fourth grader Eliza Mastropieri took home the first prize; second-place was another WI fourth grader, Sarah Clayton, with third place going to Isabella Meyer, WI third grader. All top three finishers won new Nooks.
Reports Cathy Hansen, VP for Communications of the Junior League of Westchester-on-Hudson who put on the event, “When the contest was down to two, Sarah Clayton misspelled 'vegetarian.' Mastropieri spelled 'vegetarian' correctly and then won by spelling 'thermostat' correctly."
