SHFC Week 3 game recaps

PHOTOS: Cyclones, Red Fury huddle at halftime and lead an offensive charge

We are now three weeks in to the 10-week SHFC fall soccer schedule. Teams have been working hard to improve as players and collectively as a team. Our players rely heavily upon the support of their volunteer coaches and their families who coordinate their busy schedules and cheer from the sidelines! It is because of the commitment of the players, their families and SHFC volunteers that we have had another fantastic week in our county-wide competitive youth soccer program.

Check out the game recaps from this weekend’s play:

2010 Boys All Reds travelled to the Eastchester Eagles and won 4-1. The team, which passed successfully more than 100 times during the game, is coached by Gary Fairley, Oladipo Ashiru and Aaron Lucchetti. The All Reds host the Castleford Blizzards at Pocantico School field at 12:15 on Sunday September 30.

2010 Girls Bandits had another great win against Rye Rush this week (5-1). They are currently 2-1 for the season. The team continues to display impressive sportsmanship and spirit. Several of the goals were assisted with great passing and communication. They travel again to Rye on September 30 for a 1:15pm game against the Rye Warriors. Go Bandits!

2009 Boys United travelled to the John Jay White. The score is not available. United are coached by Gary Fairley, Kurt Pisani and Eric Valenti. They will host the Castleford Rockets at Pocantico School field at 11am on Sunday September 30.

2009 Boys Red Lions maintained their undefeated record with a strong 8-4 win over Munay Maroon from Ossining. Man-of-the Match, Samuel Quezada, led the charge with a hat trick and unparalleled hustle at both ends of the pitch, Ralfy Rodriguez netted 2, and Guigo Dias, Hanover Gottlock and Jayden Penaloza each had one for the Red Lions. Dexter Scheller, Yahir Saetama, Justin Murocho, Josue Vallejo, Magnus Cawley, Noel McCarthy and Joey Balascio all kept the defense and midfield solid and continually frustrated a much bigger and quite skilled Ossining squad. The Red Lions face FC Transylvania Barca at Pocantico Hills this Sunday at 1:30.

2009 Girls Red Fury coached by Katie McMahon, John Sutherland and Jim McGovern squeezed out a win against the Eastchester Reign in Tuckahoe. The undefeated Fury played a solid first half, with Meghan McMahon, Breanne Rodriguez, and Rachel Richardson recording shots on goal. Miss Rodriguez broke a scoreless tie, translating a beautiful pass from Meghan McMahon into the first tally of the game. After Eastchester scored two unanswered goals, the Fury responded with Meghan McMahon connecting on a pass from Rachel Richardson. Miss McMahon also broke the tie, giving the Fury the lead going into the second half.

The teams played a tight second half, especially considering many of the Fury were playing new positions. The Fury continued to charge, with several drives from the offense including Swara Ketkar, Charlotte Spiridakis, Sofia Cruz, Erin Arnegger, Grace McGovern, and Mayiumi Marcus Kanesaka. The defense led by Rose Ritz, Maeve Yox, Kate Masters and goalie Meghan McMahon keep the Reign off the board in the second half. The Red Fury play the Chappaqua Blast next week at 3:45PM in Pocantico Hills.

2008 Girls Red Comets played a good game but suffered a tough loss on Sunday to the Manhattan Ravens 2-1. Midway through the second half, Jhoselyn Pugo hit a rocket that bounced off the left post and on a second opportunity, Kim Molina delivered a score to put the Red Comets up 1-0 with 10 minutes to play. The Manhattan Ravens kept fighting and made two good plays on a great pass and score and corner kick to go up 2-1 and win the game. Overall, the Red Comets despite the loss have seen better play each game with strong efforts all around. At 0-3, they hope to break into the win column soon!

2008 Boys Fusion travelled to the White Plains Black and saw a stalemate for much of the first half until Jezrael Panama in midfield sent the ball to Pierce Davis, who scored on a breakaway. It quickly became 2-0 when Sean Mackiewicz dispossessed a goal kick.

In the second half, Mackiewicz scored again with an assist from Aiden Lee. Fusion’s offense brought speed and pressure, and controlled the tempo and possession of the ball, in particular by Kieran Degen and Jack Zhunio down the middle, Jaiden Brito and Ian Papadopoulos on the left side, and Dylan Largo and Bruno Flores on the right.

A beautiful goal by Largo, recovering a rebound from Zhunio, was called back as offsides, though Fusion didn’t see it that way. Lastly, Panama scored off his defensive takeaway in the game’s final minute.

Defense from Fusion’s Edwin Dutan, Justin Paute, Dylan Pasato and Raul Socualaya was solid and in top form against a very aggressive White Plains. Lee did a terrific job as sweeper, leaving very few attempts at Fusion’s goal. Largo and Davis shared goalkeeper duties, deflecting any shots their way for much of the game until the Black managed to sneak in two breakaway goals later in the game.

Coaches George Papadopoulos and Ken Mackiewicz were pleased with their team’s strongest and most cohesive outing so far this season. With a final score of 4-2, Fusion improves to 3-0 and will host the Greenburgh United Broncos at Hackley School field at 4:30 on Sunday, September 30.

2008 Boys River Sharks travelled to LMFC Gold Knights, winning 4-2. They are coached by Ed Greenberg, Gerardo Soto and Michael Glynn. The River Sharks will host the Deportivo Yonkers PSG at Hackley School field at 3pm on Sunday, September 30.

2007 Girls Blaze Ahhh, the plight of soccer coaches. There was the Blaze goalie Emily Aridas fighting a breakaway by the Castleford Lions in the U12 Tier-1 WYSL Division, when she came out of the goal to challenge the opposing striker, who shot the ball on goal only to have Emily make a sliding save with her hands up, deflecting the shot and preserving for the time being, the Blaze's 1 - 0 lead. Was SHFC goalie coach Herb Weltig able to see his young female protege's save, who he coached at numerous goalie classes this summer though? No, because he was off coaching another SHFC team.

The Blaze earned their early lead when, less than three minutes into the game, striker Kayla McGuigan passed to center Gemma Fante who scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season, putting the Blaze ahead 1 - 0. Half way through the first half, the Blaze's throw-in extraordinaire Gabby Disney passed to Kayla McGuigan who made a centering pass to teammate Julissa Casiano who found the back of the Lions' net. That goal was needed, as the Castleford Lions, scored their first and only goal of the game on a 2 - 1 breakaway minutes later. Five saves by the Blaze kept the score 2 - 1 at the half.

Castleford kept the pressure on the Blaze throughout the second, with 8 shots on goal, none of which were allowed to pass into the net.. Blaze coaches John Sutherland and Annette O'Hanlon kept rotating defenders into the game, as Maggie Yalmokis, Ellie Fox, Meghan O'Hanlon and Penny McVey continuously cleared the balls. A strong attempt for a third Blaze goal led by Blaze midfielder Zoey Murphy who dribbled past two players and passed to forward Lizzie Molina was denied by a diving Lions' goalie. Likewise, with only minutes to play, when forward Juliana Marvin dribbled past a midfielder and passed between two defenders to hit sister Sammie Marvin, the Lions' goal keeper made another diving lay to keep the final score 2 - 1 Blaze.

2007 Boys Dynamo coached by Alberto Blanco fell to the LMFC Blue Gunners 5-3. They close out a 4-game home stretch and host the Chappaqua Revolution on Sunday September 30 at 1:30pm at Hackley School field.

2007 Boys Dutchmen met a tough match against the talented Briarcliff Beasts. The Briarcliff boys came out powerfully and quickly, jumping to a 4-0 lead before the half. The Dutchmen regrouped as Joey F scored two goals, putting the Beasts on their heels. The Dutchmen, despite hitting at least three crossbars and posts were unable to make it all the way back and finished behind 5-2.

2006 Girls Storm coached by Kevin Richardson and Tom Andruss hosted the White Plains Black, winning 3-1. The host the Mahopac Strikers at 2:45pm on Washington Irving Field on Sunday September 30.

2006 Boys Firebolts coached by Ricardo Gonzalez fell 4-2 at home against the John Jay Purple. They travel to the Mahopac Fury on Sunday, September 30.

2006 Boys Warriors fell to the Landsdowne Yonkers Cougars 3-1 on Sunday. The Warriors had a strong game but the well organized Cougars' attack proved too much this time. The Warriors are looking forward to their game against the John Jay in Cross River this Sunday the 30th.

2005 Girls Cyclones It was a nail-biter this Sunday with a 0-0 score at halftime. The Cyclones started the 2nd half with a beautiful goal- Christine Kern started the sequence from left midfield, with a pass to Caitlyn O’Hanlon. Caitlyn hit a beautiful through ball to Ywomie Mota who carried the ball and put it in the net from the far right side. The Cyclones kept the momentum going- when the Somers Night Hawks tried to clear the ball, Thalia Tsilibies applied pressure and using her knee, put the ball into the net. The Cyclones were up by two until the Hawks retaliated with a quick goal. Keeping the pressure on; Thalia Tsilibies carried the ball and took a shot, the keeper deflected the shot and Colleen Coffey was there to put the ball into the net. The Cyclones defense and keeper shut down the offense’s numerous attempts and held steady, keeping the final score 3-2, Cyclones.

2005 Boys Legends had a terrific comeback on Sunday, coming from 3-1 down to win 7-4 with a hat trick from Nikhil, a perfect hat trick (left foot, right foot, header) from Kieran and a spinning header from Kenneth, all enabled by excellent passing and approach play across the team. Best wishes to the Port Chester center back who was taken to the ER with a broken collar bone.

2005 Boys Red Devils tied the White Plains Porto Red at 2-2. On Sunday, September 30, they travel to the Pleasantville Thunderbolts for their last in a stretch of 4 away games. They are coached by Francisco Mendieta, Mark Taylor and Cedric Smith.

2004 Boys Argentina coached by Luis Lewis travelled to the Port Chester Jaguars, winning by a score of 6-1. On Sunday, September 30, they travel to the division-leading Harrison Eagles.

JV Girls Aguias The Girls JV team played the second very talented team from Harrison, that belong in a Premier or Academy program. The team suffered a 6-0 loss, but despite the score line still kept their heads up and pushed to the end to try and score a goal. We still have some players on the disabled list and others missing the game due to conflicts.

The Aguias (Eagles) play at home next Sunday 9/30 @ Washington Irving School at 9:00 AM against Riverdale United.

JV Boys Los Gauchos coached by Luis Lewis, Bill Julian and Pepe Monteforte tied 2-2 with the Rye Real Rye. At 1pm on Sunday, September 30 they will host at WI Field the Port Chester Bengals.
